At the beginning of her career, Idil Elveris worked as a lawyer and legal consultant in New York, Kosovo, Britain and Istanbul. She is a member of the New York Bar since 1998. Beginning an academic career at Istanbul Bilgi University in 2003, she pioneered the establishment of legal clinics and a pro bono network in Turkey. She taught many courses at Bilgi Law School and conducted law and society research with her colleagues on the judiciary and legal profession. While providing legal education in prisons to inmates through her legal clinic students, she also established a pro bono network for non-governmental organizations.
Elveris completed her PhD in Political Science at Istanbul Bilgi University in 2012. She is an avid social media user. Following the brutal murder of Özgecan Aslan, the hashtag #sendeanlat that she coined in 2015 helped to make the sexual harassment experienced by women in Turkey visible even before the #metoo movement.
In 2005, Elveris was certified as a mediator by the ADR Group in London. Since then, she taught and provided training in mediation and developed mediation projects. In 2019, she started a podcast called WeCanFindAWay which aims to raise awareness among people about conflict resolution through alternative means. She is currently a Visiting Fellow at the LSE European Institute.
Initially launched in Turkish, Idil Elveris later gave the podcast an English name: We Can Find A Way (initially: Anlaşabiliriz). This is the only bilingual podcast that addresses conflict on an international scale.
The podcast has featured close to seventy topics to date and covers inter-personal conflicts; conflicts in the workplace and public spaces; between communities and countries. Idil Elveris believes that everyone should develop some conflict resolution awareness, as well as negotiation, mediation and restorative justice mindfulness and consider alternative methods to resolve problems in constructive ways.
Many experts in their fields were guests on the podcast.
